My tummy started hurting around midnight but I was able to fall asleep for a few hours. At 3:00 AM I was up pacing around the bathroom wondering what the heck was going on. I was sure that I was just having cramps or something. I went back into the bedroom, turned on the light and got Kevin up - which took him a minute to realize what was going on. I told him that I really didn't think it was anything but I started timing the pain anyway and realized that it was coming about 5 min apart. Then we were off to the hospital. I was still sure that it was nothing and they would send us back home. When we got there the nurse told us that I was definitely in labor and I was already dilated 5 cm. She was amazed that I wasn't in more pain. Little did she know that I was so unsure about coming to the hospital because I have had gas pains that hurt that bad before! I guess I was more prepared for labor than I thought. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be at all! At about 4:15 I got my epidural. I was terrified it was going to hurt and my legs were shaking so hard. It wasn't very bad at all. However, the first attempt didn't work. At this point the pain was pretty intense and I teared up a little when they said they were going to have to redo the epidural. Kevin held me while they finished up and I was back to resting again before I knew it. Around 8:30 the doctor came in and broke my water and by 11:00 I was ready to go! Kevin was so great during the delivery. He helped hold one of my legs up and kept me motivated and calm the whole time. The whole thing was a lot better than I ever expected. A few pushes later Kevin looked back at me and said, "I see dark curly hair!" It was an extra push of motivation and then the doctor had me give it one last push. Kevin wanted to help catch her, and he looked surprised that it was already time when the doctor told him where to place his hands and get ready to welcome her to the world. That was it, our little baby girl was finally here.

Weslie Kensington Smith was born at 12:21 on Wednesday, October 5th. Weighing 7 pounds 7 ounces and 20 inches long. She came to us 4 days early on a rainy day. When she first came out, the doctor noticed her color wasn't changing quick enough so they put her on the baby table and checked her out. It turned out her fluids and oxygen count was low, so they took her into the nursery and Kevin went with her to make sure she was ok. When they got her on the table in the nursery she fought the nurses and doctors off. At just an hour old, she was ripping out the oxygen tubes, and heart monitors, and swiping anything with a cord within reach, and not letting go. All the doctors were so surprised how strong she was, that they opted to hold off on some of the tests because she had improved so quickly. Once I wasn't feeling sick anymore, I went into the nursery and got to be with my babe. Within a few hours, all follow-up tests were better than average and she was taken off her monitors and we got to have some alone time as a family.

She is absolutely prefect. I still can't believe this beautiful baby girl is ours. We could sit and just stare at her cute little mug for hours and hours. We are so in love with her and so grateful that she is part of our family.

The last few days have been a blur. Time is already flying by way too fast. Last night was our first night home and it was a long one. Wes has her days and nights mixed up so I was up with her all night. Today grandma came back from her relatives and she is here to stay now. We are so glad she is here. She has been such a big help. We love you and appreciate everything mom! Becoming a new mom myself has definitely changed my perspective on things. You can't really understand that kind of unconditional love until you become a mom yourself.
